Jagdeep comes from Punjab, India, a region grappling with severe water scarcity and complex farmer-government relations. Growing up in the agricultural heartland of India, he witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by farmers due to depleting groundwater levels and changing climate patterns. Driven by a deep understanding of these issues and a desire to help farmers, Jagdeep earned his undergraduate degree in agriculture at Punjab Agricultural University before pursuing graduate studies in the United States.
“A pivotal moment in my career came when a farmer thanked me for how the leaf color chart (LCC) I had promoted helped him save approximately 40 lbs/acre of urea fertilizer. This experience solidified my decision to pursue higher studies in agriculture to better understand and assist more farmers,” says Jagdeep.
Jagdeep earned his Master’s in agronomy at New Mexico State University studying drought tolerance mechanisms in guar, and completed his Ph.D. at Auburn University, evaluating yield dynamics, nutrient efficiency, and stress physiology of cotton. In addition to his research, Jagdeep honed his extension and outreach skills by contributing to events and field days throughout his education, including leading hands-on demonstrations of root phenotyping techniques.
Jagdeep is thrilled to begin his career as the UC Cooperative Extension Agronomy Advisor and looks forward to conducting research and extension work that will benefit local farmers while enhancing sustainable agricultural practices in the region.
Eager to engage with the local agricultural community, Jagdeep encourages everyone to get in touch. He can be reached by email at fgssingh@ucanr.edu, by calling the UCCE Siskiyou extension office at (530) 842-2711, or by stopping by the office located at 1655 South Main Street in Yreka.
